What Is Petite Sizing And Where Can You Buy The Best Petite Clothes?

Petite sizing in women’s fashion can be confusing, and it is not always straight-forward. The term ‘petite’ is largely used in the fashion industry to describe clothing that is made for women who are 5’3” and under, not necessarily women who are petite in height and frame.

You can be any size from 2-28 and beyond and to still fall into the petite fashion category, though you won’t necessarily find all of those sizes readily available from fashion brands in the UK. The majority of petite fashion brands sell clothing in sizes 8-16. So if you are outside of these sizes it can be a challenge to find well-fitting clothes.

Many women who are a little above 5’3” - up to around 5’5” also prefer to wear petite clothing sometimes for a better fit compared to regular size clothing that is made for women who are up to 5’9” tall. Equally, petite women do not always need to buy clothes that are made specifically for women who are 5’3” and under. Ultimately, there is no one size fits all and it may take some trial and error to find what works best for you.

So how is petite clothing different to regular clothing? Petite clothes are of course shorter in length but in many cases they also have modified proportions to ensure a better fit for a smaller frame.

If you think petite clothes might be a good option for you but you’re not sure, the best thing to do is to think about how regular size clothes fit you right now. Are you constantly rolling up the sleeves on tops? Do your jeans bunch at the ankles? Do dresses fall in all the wrong places, particularly at your bust and waist? Do coats drown your frame? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, then it may be time to try some petite clothes.

Although the choice for petite clothing is still relatively small compared to regular size clothes and not every brand offer inclusive sizes across their petite ranges, there are some fantastic petite brands in the UK right now and we’re sure we can help you find some brands that will work for your body no matter your shape, size or height.

Here is a list of our favourite petite brands, where we break down what they offer in terms of sizes, styles and price range so you can discover what works for you. Best Petite Brands For Staples & Over 50s Fashion

We first found Seasalt Cornwall on the hunt for the best petite coats around and the only thing we were disappointed with were how quickly they sell out! Seasalt is also a favourite with our over 50 petites particuarly when quality and fit are top priority. Seasalt is great for elevated basics, casual comfortable styles and quality staples. Their petite jeans and trousers selection is small but mighty and well worth a look. Their prices are mid-range and they offer petite sizes 6-28 but their range does sell out quick.

Best Petite Brand You Can Rely on

If you’re tired of endless searches and you want a great all rounder you can rely on at any time - M&S is our top pick. M&S has a great selection of petite jeans and petite trousers, in sizes 6-24. Their prices are mid-range and the quality is very good. M&S is great for wardrobe staples and while they don’t have a vast selection of petite coats, we do find that their regular coats offer a much better better fit for petite’s than the average brand - one of our team who is 5’1” regularly wears their regular fit tops and coats for example without any issue. Looking for petite dresses - thankfully this has really grown in recent years. We’re particularly loving the addition of RO&ZO on M&S that has some of the most gorgeous petite dresses you can buy right now.
