Autumn and winter are about putting together an outfit you love, and adding a coat or jacket that elevates everything, not hides it.
Give me a defined waist. A dramatic faux-fur collar. A raincoat I'd happily wear even if it wasn't raining. The best petite coats and jackets should make you look forward to getting dressed, whether it's for a weekend in the countryside, dinner somewhere extravagant or an ordinary Tuesday that deserves a special coat.
After six years specialising in petite fashion as the founder and editor-in-chief of Friday Petite, I know how exciting finding the right coat can be. This is my edit of the outerwear I'm loving right now, from coats that have the wow-factor to everyday jackets you'll want to wear on repeat. Some weekends call for a walk by the sea, a very good lunch and absolutely no checking of work emails. The forecast may have other ideas. I’d still like to go.
Seasalt is already a favourite with Friday Petite readers, and the Path Maker is the raincoat leading this edit. I’m drawn to the adjustable waist: you can change the shape, rather than accepting that wet-weather dressing has to mean disappearing inside your coat.

The coat that completely freshens up your wardrobe
There’s something very satisfying about throwing a sharply tailored coat over jeans. You haven’t changed much, but suddenly the whole outfit has more presence. This Karen Millen grey midi has the structured shoulders and double-breasted front I’d choose for exactly that reason.
The fabric contains 45% wool, and it’s fully lined. I’d consider this for the tailoring as much as the colour: grey gives you room for a bright scarf, a favourite bag or a beautiful pair of boots. And yes, I’d wear it somewhere smarter too. I just wouldn’t save it for that.

Now this is a parka I’d stop scrolling for. The cape changes the whole shape, bringing a little sweep and drama to something you might otherwise buy purely for practical reasons. I’d enjoy wearing this over a simple outfit and letting the coat take over.

This is the shorter jacket I keep coming back to. Tan faux shearling has so much texture that even jeans and a simple top feel like an outfit. I love having that option for the days when a long coat feels like too much, but I still want something with character.

Oh, that collar. The Coast belted midi is the sort of coat that makes me want to book dinner somewhere, although I’d be quite happy wearing it out for coffee too. The faux fur brings the drama; the belt gives you a waist. You can be covered up and still enjoy the shape of what you’re wearing.
There’s no need to compete with it underneath. I’d wear it over jeans and boots in the daytime, then let it frame a dress in the evening. If the coat makes you feel this dressed up, why ration it to special occasions?

One of my very favourite coats that I own is the Sosandar Stone Faux Suede & Shearling Double Breasted Coat. It isn’t petite, but it works for me at just under 5ft 3in. I’m curvy and love wearing heels, and the things I often struggle with in coats—too much length through the body or sleeves—haven’t been an issue with this one.
That’s my experience of this particular coat. Where the shoulder, sleeve and hem fall matters more to me than assuming petite will always be the answer. It really depends on the coat, your proportions and your experiences on fit.
Still thinking about burgundy?
And then there’s burgundy. If you were thinking you’d stick to neutrals, the Dorothy Perkins Petite Midi Length Fitted Military Coat might complicate things. The fitted shape and double-breasted front give it definition; the colour is what keeps drawing me back.
I’d wear it with dark denim, a fine knit and boots. Nothing elaborate. Just a coat you’re pleased to put on, even when it’s cold outside. That’s what I want from winter dressing.

One last temptation: black or berry
Karen Millen has gone all in on the collar and cuffs here, and I’m very much in favour. The Petite Faux Fur Cuff and Collar Midi Coat has a belt to bring the shape back to your waist. Black feels dramatic; berry brings colour into the picture. Neither needs to wait for a party invitation.
